As blockchain technology is applied in an increasing number of technical areas, more and more inventions involving its use are proving to be patentable. In order to capitalise on these opportunities, a comprehensive understanding of various related issues is needed, such as the fields of application, searching and examining blockchain, the current blockchain landscape, links to other new developments such as AI, and the associated challenges and opportunities that this new technology brings to patenting.

On 4 December 2018 the EPO hosted a conference entitled “Patenting Blockchain”, an event designed to open a discussion around the impact of Blockchain on the patent system.

In a series of presentations and panel discussions, participants exchanged views about challenges and opportunities and discussed various solutions for how the patent system can provide applicants with a solid framework for patenting blockchain inventions.
